The Davao City Coastal Road is an 18.50-kilometer highway running parallel to the coast, designed to alleviate congestion in the city’s core by offering an alternate route for commuters and vehicles traveling through Davao. Stretching from the Barangay Bago Aplaya to R. Castillo Street, this new thoroughfare will link key districts of the city, easing traffic flow and providing breathtaking views of the Davao Gulf.
The road’s multi-phase construction began in 2017 and is being led by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). With the first phase set to open in 2024, the project is being hailed as a game-changer for the future of Davao City.
"The Coastal Road will not only cut travel time, but it will also unlock new areas for development, both residential and commercial," says Engr. Ariel Ang, project manager at DPWH.
For years, residents of Davao have contended with heavy traffic, especially in major business hubs like Lanang and Toril. The Coastal Road is expected to reduce congestion by diverting vehicles away from central areas and redistributing traffic across the city's southern corridor.
Traffic Reduction Benefits:
"Davao City has long needed an alternate route to decongest the downtown area. This road will be a relief to both daily commuters and the logistics industry," says Ana Gonzales, a local transport analyst.
The Coastal Road will unlock vast areas along Davao's coast, creating opportunities for real estate development. Property prices are expected to surge as demand rises for both residential and commercial spaces with access to this new route. Areas that were previously considered remote will become prime locations for high-end subdivisions, beachfront properties, and even commercial complexes.
Real Estate Forecast:
"Once the Coastal Road is fully operational, the demand for properties along this route will skyrocket. We're already seeing a lot of interest from investors," says Carlos Reyes, a real estate developer in Davao
The Davao Coastal Road isn’t just for residential developments. Businesses, especially those in logistics, retail, and tourism, will benefit from enhanced connectivity. Commercial hubs are expected to spring up along the route, with opportunities for hotels, shopping centers, and industrial zones, particularly near Toril and Matina Aplaya.
Commercial Development Highlights:
"Davao is positioning itself as the economic gateway to Mindanao. With the Coastal Road, we expect a huge influx of business investments along this new route," shares Anna Marie del Rosario, a commercial property consultant.
Davao City is already known for its vibrant culture, pristine beaches, and eco-tourism opportunities. The Coastal Road will enhance the lifestyle of both residents and visitors, giving easy access to Samal Island and other coastal attractions. The road’s scenic route is expected to become a tourist attraction in itself, with coastal parks and recreational areas planned along the way.
Tourism Growth:
The development of the Davao Coastal Road comes with a focus on protecting the surrounding environment. The project incorporates coastal protection measures, such as seawalls, flood barriers, and green spaces to safeguard against flooding and erosion. Sustainability is a key focus, ensuring that the road will enhance the city without damaging its natural beauty.
"Our goal is to create a road that improves Davao's connectivity while protecting the city's coastal ecosystems," says DPWH Undersecretary Emil Sadain.
The Davao Coastal Road is more than just a highway; it’s a transformative project that will reshape the city’s connectivity, real estate landscape, and economic prospects.
